Masterpieces belonging to the Early Renaissance are displayed in this room of the Uffizi Gallery.
Masolino and Masaccio Sant'Anna Metterza, dated 1424, shows both the ancient style linked to the Gothic tradition in the way Masolino painted Saint Ann, and the more "modern" way of perceiving the volume recognizable in the way Masaccio painted the Virgin Mary.
A painting where we can very well comprehend the kind of "mixture", typical of that epoch, between the ancient taste linked to the Gothic Style and the novelties linked to the new Renaissance sensitivity is the Battle of San Romano by Paolo Uccello, as it shows the fairy tale-like atmosphere which makes us think of the International Gothic, but also a large use of perspective in a very innovative way, typical of the Renaissance.
